In 1999, Mohammed Shakiel Parker started importing instant noodles into South Africa under the Alhami brand. This was the start of a lifelong journey in the pioneering and development of instant noodles in South Africa as an industry. Micawber 803 Pty Ltd, trading as The Noodle Factory, became the first independent manufacturer of instant noodles in South Africa. An IDC and dti-funded project (which commenced in 2010) started from green fields and is a pioneer of a new industry in the country. Much-needed skills have been developed through the training of the local, unskilled population, and these can be applied to a multitude of industries. In 2018, further funding for the expansion of plant was secured via the IDC and dti’s BIS programme. The new capacity (which came online in April 2019) gives The Noodle Factory the largest single capacity on a noodle line on the African continent.
